Friday, June 13, 2014

Islamic Republic (Iran): Execution and Extortion

Friday, June 13, 2014

Iranian authorities have reportedly asked for money in exchange for the bodies of 2 executed prisoners.

In May 2014, 2 brothers, Abdol Jamal Zehi, 26, and Hamid Jamal Zehi, 22, were reportedly hanged to death in Chabahar Prison in southern Iran on drug trafficking charges. Iranian authorities reportedly refused to hand over the bodies of these 2 young men until their family paid 11 million Tomans (approximately $4,000).

An informed source, who wishes to remain anonymous, told HRANA that the bereaved mother of these 2 brothers was finally able to recover the bodies after raising 5 million Tomans (approximately $1,600). "She had to raise the money by pleading with family members also going into debt," says the source.

Iranian authorities carried out the executions in secret and no official news agency in Iran reported on it.

Amirkhosravi

Islamic Republic (Iran) executes billionare guilty of fraud

By The Associated Press - Saturday, May 24, 2014, 6:27 p.m.

TEHRAN, Iran — A billionaire businessman at the heart of a $2.6 billion state bank scam in islamic Republic (Iran), the largest fraud case since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, was executed Saturday, state television reported.

Authorities put Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death at Evin prison, just north of the capital, Tehran, the TV reported. The report said the execution occurred Iran's Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.

Khosravi's lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying the death sentence was carried out without him being given any notice. Death sentences in Iran are usually carried out by hanging.

“I had not been informed about the execution of my client,” Riahi said. “All the assets of my client are at the disposal of the prosecutor's office.”

The fraud involved using forged documents to get credit at one of Iran's top financial institutions, Bank Saderat, to purchase assets including state-owned companies like major steel producer Khuzestan Steel Co.

Khosravi's business empire included more than 35 companies from mineral water production to a football club and meat imports from Brazil.

A total of 39 defendants were convicted in the case. Four received death sentences, two got life sentences and the rest received sentences of up to 25 years in prison.

The trials raised questions about corruption at senior levels in Iran's tightly controlled economy during the administration of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mahmoud Reza Khavari, a former head of Bank Melli, another major Iranian bank, escaped to Canada in 2011 after he resigned over the case. He is charged in the case in Iran and remains on the Islamic Republic's wanted list. Khavari admitted that his bank partially was involved in the fraud, but has maintained his innocence

Afghan Juvenile Executed in Islamic Republic (Iran) for Drug-Related Charges

Tuesday, May 6, 2014| last updated at 08:03AM

A 15 year old Afghan juvenile offender has been executed in the prison of Isfahan. Reports indicate that he was convicted of drug-related charges and didn’t have access to lawyer. Iranian authorities claim that juveniles are not executed in Iran. This is the seventh juvenile offender being executed in Iran in 2014. What separates this case from the other juvenile executions is that this is the first known case in several years where a juvenile is executed on drug charges. Iran Human Rights urges the United Nations to investigate this case and react towards the juvenile executions in Iran.

Iran Human Rights, May 6, 2014: According to reports by sources in Afghanistan a juvenile offender has recently been executed in Iran. The Dari section of Radio Liberty (Radio Azadi), reported that a 15 year old Afghan boy identified as Jannat Mir was among the six Afghan citizens who were executed in the Dastgerd prison of Isfahan in April. Iran Human Rights (IHR) recently reported about the execution of six Afghan citizens on April 18.

According to Radio Azadi, Jannat Mir and the five others executed in Isfahan were all convicted of drug-related charges. In an interview with Radio Azadi, Jannat Mir’s brother “Nazok Mir” said that “Jannat Mir was a 9th grade school boy who left Afghanistan to Iran two years ago. He was arrested by the Iranian authorities and sentenced to death for drug-trafficking. He didn’t have access to lawyer and the Iranian authorities didn’t allow the family to take the body back to Afghanistan. So they had to bury Jannat Mir in Isfahan”. It is not clear whether Jannat Mir was 15 at the time of his arrest or the execution.

IHR urges the UN to investigate this case and if confirmed take appropriate measures against the Iranian authorities. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said: ” Execution of juvenile offenders for drug-related charges is not only a serious violation of the international law, but it also violates the Iranian law. We urge the UN to take this particular case and the other reports on the execution of juveniles in Iran seriously and take appropriate measures”.

At least 7 juvenile executions have been reported in 2014 in Iran. Recently the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty called on Iranian authorities to stop juvenile executions.

Islamic Republic (Iran) hangs 16 in reprisal for Pakistan border killings

28 April 2014| last updated at 08:03AM

Iran said it executed 16 "rebels" Saturday in reprisal after gunmen killed at least 14 border guards near the border with Pakistan, in a rugged area often rocked by violence.

The ambush happened overnight in the mountains of Sistan-Baluchestan, a province in southeastern Iran.

The province is home to a large community of minority Sunni Muslims, unlike the rest of Shiite-dominated Iran, where drug traffickers and Sunni militants operate.

"Fourteen border guards were killed during armed clashes in the region of Saravan, and five others were wounded," the official IRNA news agency said, citing what it called an informed source.

The unnamed source identified the gunmen as "bandits or rebels opposed to the Islamic republic".

But Deputy Interior Minister Ali Abdollahi said the guards were killed in an ambush set by Iranians who were "members of hostile groups".

"Three soldiers have been taken hostage and taken to the other side of the border in Pakistan," he said, adding Iran would "take measures to secure their release".

In retaliation for the attack, the Iranian authorities said they hanged 16 "rebels" held at a prison in the region.

"Sixteen rebels linked to groups hostile to the regime were hanged this morning in the prison of Zahedan in response to the death of border guards in Saravan," Mohammad Marzieh, attorney general of Sistan-Baluchestan, was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

Abdollah said "we warned the rebel groups that any attack targeting civilians or members of the security forces would not go unanswered".

He also called on the Pakistani government to "take measures to control the border more seriously".

The region has seen bloody clashes during the past few years.

Officials say more than 4,000 police officers and soldiers have been killed there in three decades of fighting with drug traffickers.

Iran is a major transit route for drugs that originate in Afghanistan and are trafficked across its territory, much of them bound for Western countries.

People smugglers also use the route to traffick illegal immigrants to Europe, via Iran and Turkey.

Officials say Iran has spent millions of dollars to build a "wall" along lengthy stretches of its 1,700-kilometre (1,050-mile) eastern border with Afghanistan and Pakistan in a bid to stop the trafficking.

Work on the barrier began in the 1990s and is expected to be completed before the end of next year.

The Islamic republic says it is fighting a deadly war against drug traffickers who make up half of its prison population.

But Sunni militant group Jundallah (Soldiers of God) has also launched attacks on civilians and officials in Sistan-Baluchestan, including a December 2010 suicide bombing in the city of Shabahar that killed 39 people.

The Iranian authorities hanged 11 suspected members of Jundallah at Zahedan prison in December 2010 in response to the deadly bombing of the Shiite mourning procession in Shabahar.

Jundallah, whose leader Abdolmalek Rigi was hanged in June 2010, has been waging a deadly insurgency in southeastern Iran for almost a decade.

The group says it is fighting for the rights of the ethnic Sunni Baluchis who make up a significant part of the province's population.
