Islamic Republic (Iran) hangs three men for drug smuggling

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has hanged three men convicted of smuggling drugs and killing policemen, the official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.
Murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and apostasy -- the renouncing of Islam -- are all punishable by death under Iran's Islamic law practised since the 1979 revolution.
"They were hanged inside a prison in the city of Birjand," a local judiciary official in the eastern province of Khorasan told IRNA.
A Supreme Court had upheld their execution sentences.
Since authorities launched a clampdown on "immoral behaviour" in July 2007, police have arrested dozens of drug addicts, smugglers, rapists and murderers.

TEHRAN — Six men convicted of drug trafficking were hanged on Saturday in a prison in the central city of Isfahan, Iranian state-run television reported.
The unidentified men were part of a drug trafficking gang who used Revolutionary Guards uniforms and forged orders for their drug smuggling operations, said the report on the television's website.
It said more than a ton of narcotics as well as weapons and forged identification cards were confiscated.
The latest hangings bring to at least nine the number of people executed in Iran so far in 2010, according to an AFP count based on news reports.
Iran hanged at least 270 people in 2009 and in 2008 executed 246 people, the highest number in any country bar China.
Tehran says the death penalty is necessary for maintaining public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.
Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in the Islamic republic.

مردی را مخفیانه اعدام کردند، همسر وی در انتظار سنگسار
محمد مصطفایی، وکیل دادگستری گفت: رحیم محمدی موکل بنده صبح دیروز بدون اطلاع اینجانب و خانواده‌اش اعدام شد و قرار است به زودی کبری بابایی همسر وی نیز مطابق حکم سنگسار شود.
مصطفایی در گفت و گو با ایلنا با بیان این مطلب گفت: این جوان به همراه همسرش سال گذشته در دادگاه تبریز به حکم پنج قاضی شعبه دوم دادگاه تجدیدنظر و کیفری استان تبریز به مجازات اعدام و سنگسار محکوم شدند و با تایید دو قاضی شعبه 27 دیوانعالی کشور، حکم آنها آماده اجرا بود. این حکم روز گذشته بدون اطلاع خانواده و وکیل پرونده در محل زندان برای رحیم، متهم مرد پرونده اجرا شد و قرار است به زودی کبری بابایی نیز مطابق حکم سنگسار شود.
او با انتقاد شدید از پنهانی اجرا شدن حکم اعدام یکی از متهمان پرونده (رحیم) گفت: این جوان قربانی جامعه ای شد که زمینه ناهنجاری را برای او مهیا کرد. قربانی انسانهای فرومایه ای شد که برای شهوت رانی از موقعیت نابسامان خانواده رحیم محمدی سوء استفاده کرده و به همسر وی چشم دوختند.
سئوال من از ریاست قوه قضاییه این است که اینکه می فرمایید بايد تلاش شود تا مباني حقوق اسلامي که بر پايه احترام به جايگاه رفيع انساني است براي جوامع بشري تبيين شود؛ در چنین شرایطی چگونه است؟
وکیل این پرونده با طرح این سوال از ارائه نامه ای به رییس قوه قضاییه خبر داد و گفت: حالا نگرانی از آن است که در چند روز آینده حکم سنگسار کبری (همسر رحیم) و دیگر متهم پرونده هم به زودی اجرا شود.
