Islamic Republic (Iran) hangs 4 convicts

2:31 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011
The Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran hanged three inmates all convicted of killing two policemen, armed robbery and kidnapping and a fourth person convicted of serial killings, a news agency reported.

The semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Jaber Banshi, the head prosecutor of the southern city of Shiraz, as saying the three were hanged Saturday after all were convicted on the same charges.

They were hanged from cranes in public on a street, their eyes covered with black masks and their hands bound behind their backs. They were led to their deaths by troops armed with machine guns clad all in black with their faces hidden by black balaclavas.

The serial killer, convicted of killing eight people, was hanged in a nearby district.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug trafficking are crimes punishable with death sentences in Iran.

International rights groups have criticized Iran for its growing pace of hangings, which are often carried out in public.

Islamic Republic (Iran) Executes 10 Prisoners In Islamic Republic ( City of Mashhad)

TEHRAN | Friday March 17, 2011 2:31pm GMT

Ten more prisoners were secretly executed yesterday in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, says the International Campaign for Human Rights, citing reliable sources.

The report indicates that the prisoners were hanged without prior notice to their lawyers or their families.

The Campaign reports that these 10 prisoners were executed without official notification by the government, as has been the case with hundreds of other prisoners secretly executed in Vakilabad Prison in recent months.

The Campaign says these executions are taking place without the legally required official confirmations from the Supreme Court, which are supposed to be issued to the lawyers of the condemned prisoners.

Yesterday, the head of Iran’s Supreme Court announced that it will expedite the confirmation of execution sentences so that they will make a greater impression on the public and society.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reports that several former prisoners and families of executed prisoners at Vakilabad Prison have complained about the rushed and illegal proceedings surrounding the confirmation of prisoner death sentences.

The report also indicates that apart from Vakilabad, Birjand and Taibad prisons have been the site of several unannounced executions, with the majority of prisoners being Afghani nationals.

In the past year, the number of executions in Iran has surged dramatically. The opposition has accused the authorities of using executions as a tool to intimidate protesters who challenge the legitimacy of the Ahmadinejad administration, alleging the 2009 presidential elections were rigged.

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the rise in the number of executions in Iran.

Islamic Republic (Iran) 'Carries Out More Secret Executions' At Site Listed In UN Report

TEHRAN | Saturday March 18, 2011, 2:31pm GMT

A U.S.-based rights group says Iran has carried out 10 secret executions this month at a prison where the practice was criticized in a recent UN report.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said the 10 prisoners were executed at Vakilabad prison in Mashhad in early March without their families or lawyers being informed.

In a report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 14, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced concern about the human rights situation in Iran, including the executions of drug traffickers.
HANGING"In July 2010, a large number of prisoners were reportedly executed at one time in Mashhad prison," Ban's report said.

"When OHCHR [Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights] staff sought further information from Iranian counterparts during a visit to Tehran in December 2010, they confirmed that 60 persons had been executed in Mashhad in pending cases mostly linked to drug trafficking."

Hadi Ghaemi, the director of the New York-based group, told RFE/RL's Radio Farda, "The significant point regarding these [60] executions is that they have been documented in the latest report of the Secretary-General of the UN."

But he added, “Despite the concerns of the Secretary-General, these executions were continued on March 2, when 10 more prisoners were executed."

Ghaemi said his group understands that the latest group of executed prisoners included Afghans and Africans.

He said that such prisoners typically are unaware of the date of their execution until the last moment.
