CBC-TV - Reporter arrested in Tehran, footage erased

CBC-TV reporter Neil Macdonald and his camera crew were arrested in Iran and detained for four hours yesterday after shooting footage of a protest. (November 16, 2001)

"They were covering an anti-government protest at a soccer stadium in Tehran when they were apprehended, taken to a police station and questioned," said CBC spokesperson Ruth-Ellen Soles.

"They were forced to play their taped material, then their material was erased,'' she said, adding, "But everyone was released and everyone's fine."

Macdonald, the network's Middle East correspondent, was arrested along with an Australian reporter, his crew and two locals.

They weren't charged with any crimes, Soles said, and no one was hurt.

"But I'm sure it was very nerve-racking for everyone involved," Soles said. Foreign Affairs spokesperson Reynald Doiron confirmed the incident yesterday afternoon from Ottawa.

He said the Canadian embassy in Tehran was alerted to the incident and went to the police station. The group was subsequently released.

"They apparently had film footage not allowed in Tehran. They erased their footage," he said. "He was released and no charges were laid," the Foreign Affairs spokesperson said.

Some journalists were also threatened with expulsion from Iran, if they reported on any protests which happened after the Iran and Ireland match.
Meanwhile, the official Islamic Republic News Agency IRNA, reported the protests after the match, but said the fans were chanting slogans against football officials only.
