Islamic state (Iran) carries out 2nd execution linked to anti-government protests

Thomson Reuters · Posted: Dec 12, 2022 6:43 AM ET

Islamic regime (Iran)  hanged a man in public on Monday who had been convicted of killing two members of security forces, the judiciary's Mizan news agency reported, the second execution linked to anti-government protests in less than a week.

Nationwide protests, in their third month, erupted after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16 while in the custody of morality police enforcing strict mandatory dress code laws.

The demonstrations have turned into a popular revolt by furious Iranians from all layers of society, posing one of the worst legitimacy challenges to the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution.

"Majid Reza Rahnavard was hanged in public in [the holy Shia city of] Mashahd this morning ... he was sentenced to death for 'waging war against God' after stabbing to death two members of security forces," Mizan said.

Activists on social media criticized the execution of the 23-year-old Rahnavard as "a criminal act" by the clerical establishment to deter dissent. Islamic State (Iran) says it has executed a prisoner convicted for a crime allegedly committed during the country's ongoing nationwide protests, the first such death penalty carried out by Tehran.

Iran's hanging of another young man, Mohsen Shekari, on Thursday who was convicted of injuring a security guard with a knife and blocking a street in Tehran during protests has been widely condemned by the United States and its allies.

Rights groups have said Shekari was tortured and forced to confess.

At least 20 more people face death penalty

Amnesty International has said Iranian authorities are seeking the death penalty for at least 21 people in what it called "sham trials designed to intimidate those participating in the popular uprising that has rocked Iran."

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said on Monday that the bloc will agree on a "very tough" package of sanctions against Iran to show its support for peaceful protesters.

Blaming the unrest on foreign foes such as the United States and Israel, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani on Monday rejected Western criticism of rights abuses during the crackdown as meddling in Iran's state matters.

The unrest has been watched closely by Israel, where a national security official said the executions did not appear to be deterring protesters and could further "box in the regime."

"Because it can only respond with force, that has reinforced for the public the grievance being protested over," the Israeli official told Reuters. "There is no returning this genie to the bottle." Iran's state media aired footage of a man, whom they identified as Rahnavard, stabbing another man who fell against a parked motorcycle and then stabbing another person immediately after.

Mizan said Rahnavard was arrested when trying to flee the country 23 days ago. It said that his sentence was upheld by a higher court.

Rights group HRANA said that as of Sunday 488 protesters had been killed, including 68 minors. It said 62 members of the security forces had also been killed. As many as 18,259 protesters are believed to have been arrested, it said.

While the United Nations says the protests have cost more than 300 lives, a top Iranian state security body has said that 200 people, including members of the security forces, had died in the unrest.

Islamic state (Iran) carries out first execution over anti-government protests

By David Gritten - BBC News, 8 Dec 2022

Islamic state (Iran) has announced the first execution of a protester convicted over the recent anti-government unrest.

Mohsen Shekari was hanged on Thursday morning after being found guilty by a Revolutionary Court of "enmity against God", state media reported.
Shakeri Mohsen
He was accused of being a "rioter" who blocked a main road in Tehran in September and wounded a member of a paramilitary force with a machete.

An activist said he was convicted after a "show trial without any due process".

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Norway-based Iran Human Rights, tweeted that executions of protesters would start to take place daily unless Iranian authorities faced "rapid practical consequences internationally".

The judiciary's Mizan news agency reported that a Revolutionary Court was told that Mohsen Shekari had blocked Tehran's Sattar Khan Street on 25 September and used a machete to attack a member of the Basij Resistance Force, a volunteer paramilitary force often deployed to quell protests.

On 1 November, the court found Shekari guilty of fighting and drawing a weapon "with the intention of killing, causing terror and disturbing the order and security of society" and convicted him of "enmity against God", Mizan said.

He appealed against the verdict, but it was upheld by the supreme court on 20 November, it added.

The judiciary has so far announced that 10 other people have been sentenced to death by Revolutionary Courts on the charges of "enmity against God" or "corruption on Earth" in connection with the protests. The defendants' identities have not been disclosed.

Amnesty International said the death sentences were designed to "further repress the popular uprising" and "instil fear among the public".

Revolutionary Courts operated "under the influence of security and intelligence forces to impose harsh sentences following grossly unfair trials marked by summary and predominantly secret processes", it added.

The protests against Iran's clerical establishment erupted in mid-September, after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab, or headscarf, "improperly".

The women-led protests have spread to 160 cities in all 31 of the country's provinces and are seen as one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution.

Iran's leaders have portrayed them as "riots" instigated by the country's foreign enemies and ordered security forces to "deal decisively" with them.

So far, at least 475 protesters have been killed and 18,240 have been detained, according to the Human Rights Activists' News Agency (HRANA). It has also reported the deaths of 61 security personnel.

Islamic state (Iran) hangs protester for 'waging war on God' in first execution after nationwide unrest

Other detainees face the possibility of the death penalty for their involvement in the protests as an outcry against Iran's morality police for the killing of a woman who refused to wear a hijab

Islamic state (Iran) announced today it has executed a prisoner convicted for a crime allegedly committed during the country's ongoing protests, the first such death penalty carried out by Tehran.

Mohsen Shekari was reportedly hanged on Thursday morning after he was found guilty by a Revolutionary Court of "enmity against God".

Other detainees also face the possibility of the death penalty for their involvement in the protests, which began in mid-September as an outcry against Iran's morality police.

The protests have since expanded into one of the most serious challenges to Iran's theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Activists warn that others could also be put to death in the near future, saying that at least a dozen people so far have received death sentences over their involvement in the demonstrations.

The "execution of #MohsenShekari must be me[t] with STRONG reactions otherwise we will be facing daily executions of protesters," wrote Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director of the Oslo-based activist group Iran Human Rights.

"This execution must have rapid practical consequences internationally."

Iran's Mizan news agency reported Shekari was accused the man of blocking a street in Tehran and attacking a member of the security forces with a machete.

The member of the forces required stitches for his wounds, the agency said.

The Mizan report also alleged that Shekari said he had been offered money by an acquaintance to attack the security forces.

Iran's government for months has been trying to allege - without offering evidence - that foreign countries have fomented the unrest in the country, rather than Iranian citizens angry over the collapse of the country's finances, heavy-handed policing and the nation's other woes.

Mizan said Shekari had been arrested on Sept. 25, then convicted on Nov. 20 on the charge of "moharebeh," a Farsi word meaning "waging war against God."

That charge has been levied against others in the decades since 1979 and carries the death penalty.

Mizan said an appeal by Shekari's lawyer against the sentence had failed before his execution.

The Mizan news agency, run by the country's judiciary, said Shekari had been convicted in Tehran's Revolutionary Court, which typically holds closed-door cases that have been internationally criticized for not allowing those on trial to pick their own lawyers or even see the evidence against them.

After his execution, Iranian state television aired a heavily edited package showing the courtroom and parts of Shekari's trial, presided over by Judge Abolghassem Salavati.

Salavati faces U.S. sanctions for overseeing cases "in which journalists, attorneys, political activists and members of Iran's ethnic and religious minority groups were penalized for exercising their freedom of expression and assembly and sentenced to lengthy prison terms, lashes and even execution," according to the U.S. Treasury.

Iran has been rocked by protests since the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained by the country's morality police.

At least 475 people have been killed in the demonstrations amid a heavy-handed security crackdown, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that's been monitoring the protests since they began.
