Hanging (Execution) June & July  2009

Islamic Republic (Iran) hangs man for rape, murder of minor

Jul 23, 2009 at 06:17 AM

Islamic Republic (Iran) has hanged a man convicted of rape and murder in an execution carried out in a prison in the southern town of Estehban, the Kayhan newspaper reported on Thursday.

The man, identified only by his first name Edris, 21, was found guilty of raping and killing a 15-year-old girl, the report said, without saying when the execution occurred.

The hanging brings to at least 184 the number of people executed in the Islamic republic so far this year, according to a count by news agency AFP based on news reports.

In 2008, Iran executed 246 people, second only to China. Tehran says the death penalty is a necessary tool for maintaining public security and is only applied after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drugs trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

Islamic Republic (Iran) 'executes Sunni militants'

TEHRAN, July 14 (AFP)

Iran has executed 13 members of a Sunni rebel group blamed for a spate of attacks in the south-east of the country, Iran's state news agency says.

They were members of Jundallah (God's Soldiers). The execution of the brother of their leader was postponed, the agency reported.

Tehran blames the group for a series of attacks including the bombing of a mosque in May which killed 25 people.

Amnesty International had appealed for a stay of execution.

It said that the convicts had not received a fair trial.

Ebrahim Hamidi, who heads the judiciary in south-eastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, told the official Irna news agency on Tuesday that 13 of the group had been hanged inside a jail in the city of Zahedan.

"After last minute consultations, the executions were carried out in a prison," Mr Hamidi is quoted as saying.

Fars, a semi-official news agency, had earlier reported that the executions would be carried out in public.

Abdolhamid Rigi, the brother of the group's leader Abdolmalek Rigi, was not among those hanged on Tuesday but would be executed later this week, the report said.

'Executed in prison'

Iran state radio quoted Zahedan's prosecutor, Mohammad Marzieh, as saying that the men had been hanged for killing dozens of civilians, policemen and for bombings in the region.

Most people in Sistan-Baluchestan are Sunni Muslims and ethnic Baluchis.

The provincial capital Zahedan, near the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, is the centre of a rebellion by Baluchis.

Predominantly Shia Muslim Iran says that Jundollah is part of the Sunni Islamist al-Qaeda network.

Jundallah has claimed repeated attacks in the province, including a bombing in May in a Shia mosque in Zahedan that killed 25 people, Iranian media say.

In recent weeks the Iranian government has increased the already high number of executions, possibly as a way of asserting its authority in the wake of the disputed presidential election result, says the BBC's Jon Jeyne.

Human rights groups accuse Iran of making excessive use of the death penalty but Tehran insists it is an effective deterrent that is used only after a lengthy judicial process.

Islamic Republic (Iran) hangs 13 Sunni rebels as 'enemies of God'

14/07/2009 07:36 TEHRAN, July 14 (AFP)

In a mass prison execution, Iran on Tuesday hanged 13 rebels from the shadowy Sunni insurgent group Jundallah as "enemies of God" for a string of attacks, including kidnapping of foreigners.

The official IRNA news agency said the insurgents were executed in prison in the restive southeastern border city of Zahedan, epicentre of a Sunni Muslim rebellion against the Shiite regime in Tehran.

"Thirteen members of this group were hanged this morning," provincial judiciary chief Ebrahim Hamidi was quoted as saying.

The rebels were accused of being "mohareb" (enemies of God) and of "kidnapping foreigners, killing innocents and of carrying out terrorist acts for the Jundallah group," IRNA said, quoting a local judiciary statement.

State media had announced on Monday that 14 members of Jundallah (Soldiers of God) would be publicly executed on Tuesday.

"After last minute consultations, the executions were carried out in a prison," Hamidi said.

The media had also reported that Abdolhamid Rigi, brother of Jundallah leader Abdolmalik Rigi, was one of the rebels to be executed. Hamidi said Abdolhamid Rigi was not among those hanged on Tuesday but would be executed later this week.

Zahedan is the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan and is home to a sizeable ethnic Baluchi population.

Jundallah has claimed repeated attacks against Iranian government targets in the province which lies on a major trafficking route for narcotics destined for Europe and the Gulf.

In the latest major strike, Jundallah claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a Shiite mosque in Zahedan in May that killed 25 people, saying it was a revenge attack for the hanging of members of the Baluch minority.

The mass hangings on Tuesday come 10 days after 20 drug traffickers were executed in the town of Karaj, west of Tehran.

It is rare even in Iran, which according to human rights group Amnesty International carried out more executions than any other country apart from China in 2008, to execute such a large number of people in a single day.

In July last year, 29 people convicted of various crimes including murder, rape and drugs trafficking were executed in the largest mass execution in recent years.

Amnesty had urged the Iranian authorities to halt the Jundallah executions, saying the rebels had not received a fair trial.

"The Iranian authorities must abide by their international obligations to uphold human rights and guarantee fair trials, which is all the more essential in death penalty cases," the London-based watchdog's Middle East and North Africa director Malcolm Smart said.

Amnesty said all the accused were believed to have been arrested before the deadly attack on the Zahedan mosque, for which three people were hanged in May.

The latest hangings bring to at least 177 the number of people executed in the Islamic republic so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports. In 2008, Iran executed 246 people.

Tehran says the death penalty is a necessary tool for maintaining public security and is only applied after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Islamic Regime (Iran) Hangs 20 Criminals in One Day

Sunday July 5th, 2009 11:30 AM/EST

While Iran moves through its current political crisis, it's treatment of criminals has remained the same. It has been widely reported that the Islamic Republic has hanged 20 criminals.

Iran's news agency, IRNA, has reported that 20 Iranians convicted of drug trafficking were executed on Saturday. The executions follow the country's hanging of 12 others just days ago.

According to Reuters, "700 kg of heroin, cocaine and opium had been seized from the convicted traffickers, who were between 35 and 48 years old."

Punishment by execution is nothing new in Iran. Human rights organization Amnesty International maintains that only China performs more executions than Iran. Amnesty reported that Iran executed 346 people last year alone. An AFP count, based on news reports, estimates that Iran has executed 161 people thus far in 2009.

The crimes of murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug trafficking are all punishable by death in Iran.

Despite criticism from Europe and others for an increase in executions since 2001, Iran says it rejects Western double-standards in human rights and that it is enforcing Islamic law
