Opposition member sentenced to flogging
TEHRAN, Oct 13 (AFP) - A member of Iran's nationalist progressive opposition, Fatemeh Govarai, was sentenced to six months jail and flogging for "issuing lies and defamation," one of her relatives said Saturday. "Govarai was Thursday sentenced to six months jail and 50 lashes by the Ghazvin court," 170 kilometres (110 miles) to the west of Tehran, the source said. Govarai was charged with publishing "false information" and "defamation" about the Islamist militia -- Bassiji -- and the Pasdaran, or Revolutionary Guards. Her lawyer has until November 1 to lodge an appeal. Some 60 other members of the opposition from the same grouping were arrested in March on the charge of "plotting against the government." Most are members of the Iran Freedom Movement (IFM) established by Mehdi Bazargan, prime minister of the provisional government set up at the start of the Islamic republic in 1979, which was driven from power several months later. The activities of the IFM were tolerated up until wide-ranging arrests in March 2001, but have since been banned.
